# VERIFY BACKUP

Verifies one or more [backups](https://docs.kinetica.com/content/sql/backup_restore/create-backup.md#sql-backup-create) accessible via
the given [data source](https://docs.kinetica.com/content/sql/ddl/create-data-source.md#sql-create-data-source), checking that
each *backup's* metadata can be read and that the files its *snapshots* depend on
are present in the remote file store. By default, only the most recent
*snapshot* of each *backup* is verified.

```sql title="VERIFY BACKUP Syntax" theme={null}
VERIFY BACKUP < <backup name> | "<backup name>*" | * >
DATA SOURCE <data source name>
[WITH OPTIONS ('backup_id' = '<snapshot id>')]
```

## Parameters

> **\<backup name>**
>
> Name of the *backup(s)* to verify that are accessible via the *data source* given by
> `<data source name>`.
>
> Use `"<backup name>*"` (double-quoted) to verify all *backups* that start with `backup
>     name`.
>
> Use `*` instead of `<backup name>` to verify all *backups*.

> **\<data source name>**
>
> Name of the [data source](https://docs.kinetica.com/content/sql/ddl/create-data-source.md#sql-create-data-source) to use to access the database
> *backup* files in the remote file store.

## Options

> **backup\_id**
>
> ID of the *snapshot* to verify; the IDs of a *backup's snapshots* are listed by
> [DESCRIBE BACKUP](https://docs.kinetica.com/content/sql/backup_restore/describe-backup.md#sql-backup-desc).
>
> Use `-1` to verify all of the *backup's snapshots*.
>
> If not specified, only the most recent *snapshot* of each *backup* is verified.

## Response

The response to `VERIFY BACKUP` is a 4-column result set, with one row per
*backup* verified:

| Output Column | Description |
| - | - |
| `BACKUP_NAME` | Name of the *backup* verified |
| `VERIFIED_OK` | Whether the verification found no problems with the *backup* |
| `BACKUP_IDS` | Comma-separated list of the IDs of the *snapshots* verified |
| `ERROR_LIST` | List of the problems found, separated by semicolons; each is prefixed with the ID of the *snapshot* it was found in |

## Examples

To verify the most recent *snapshot* of the `schema_backup` *backup* accessible
via the `restore_ds` *data source*:

```sql VERIFY BACKUP Example theme={null}
VERIFY BACKUP schema_backup
DATA SOURCE = restore_ds
```

To verify every *snapshot* of all *backups* whose name starts with `conf` that
are accessible via the `restore_ds` *data source*:

```sql VERIFY BACKUP (All Snapshots of Backups with Prefix) Example theme={null}
VERIFY BACKUP "conf*"
DATA SOURCE = restore_ds
WITH OPTIONS ('backup_id' = '-1')
```

To verify the most recent *snapshot* of all *backups* that are accessible via the
`restore_ds` *data source*:

```sql VERIFY BACKUP (All Backups at Data Source) Example theme={null}
VERIFY BACKUP *
DATA SOURCE = restore_ds
```
