# DROP CATALOG

Removes an existing [catalog](/content/sql/ddl/create-catalog#sql-create-catalog).

```sql title="DROP CATALOG Syntax" theme={null}
DROP [EXTERNAL] CATALOG <catalog name>
```

<Note>
  A *catalog* cannot be dropped while
  [external tables](/content/sql/ddl/create-external-table#sql-create-ext-table) still reference it;
  the statement fails and names the dependent tables.  Drop those
  *external tables* first.

## Parameters

  <Accordion title="EXTERNAL" id="external" defaultOpen>
    Optional keyword; has no effect.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="<catalog name>" id="<catalog-name>" defaultOpen>
    Name of the existing *catalog* to remove.
  </Accordion>
</AccordionGroup>

## Examples

To drop a *catalog*, after dropping the *external table* that references it:

```sql Drop the Dependent External Table theme={null}
DROP TABLE example.ext_iceberg_flights
```

```sql DROP CATALOG Example theme={null}
DROP CATALOG iceberg_rest_cat
```
